What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity in a forest is more than how many different species of animals live there. It also includes the soil, bugs, trees, flowers, fish, fungi like mushrooms and more.

Different species need different conditions to survive such as:

Temperature
Shelter
Food and water sources

The different structures of managed forests offer diverse habitats for wildlife and plant species.

What’s an Example of Biodiversity in a Forest?

Managed forests are often in different stages of the tree life cycle. The differences can include:

Tree age
Tree height
Tree species

These differences contribute to biodiversity. This means differences in the animals, plants and stand structure. The location of a forest also affects biodiversity. Just like growing a garden in the Pacific Northwest is different than growing a garden in the Southeast U.S.

"For example, in the south, a young managed forest where the pine trees have not yet grown very tall provides the perfect environment for blackberries, goldenrod, and thistles to thrive. Those plants support multiple songbirds, pollinators, wild turkey, black bear, and deer.

The rotting woody vegetation from the previous forest stand provides habitat for reptiles and amphibians, as well as decomposers like worms, ants, and mushrooms.

In an older managed forest, where the pine trees are very tall and the forest floor is shaded, many grasses grow. This provides excellent forage for deer and quail as well as nesting habitat for turkeys and hunting opportunities for animals such as raccoons, possums, and foxes.”

Why is Biodiversity Important?

Biodiversity is crucial for a healthy ecosystem. Each species has a job they perform to maintain the balance of the ecosystem. Different species work together to maintain the conditions necessary for their collective survival.

Let’s take pollinators for example. Flowering plants and wildflowers are a food source for many pollinator species, like bees and birds.

These animals help transfer pollen across the forest every time they eat. This helps the plants reproduce and maintains a healthy ecosystem.

The plants also attract other insects that are a food source for birds and other animals. All of this helps with reforestation and biodiversity.

Maintaining biodiversity ensures forests can provide us with our essential products and provide species with their vital resources.

How Does Forest Management Help Maintain Biodiversity?

Forest management plays a large role in maintaining biodiversity. Foresters help maintain and create habitats for wildlife and plant species. They do this through using responsible forest management practices.

Some practices that help maintain biodiversity include:

Reforestation and replanting
Wildlife habitat creation and enhancement
Managing for water quality
Selective harvest
Disease and pest management
Fertilizing the soil
Controlled burns, also called a prescribed fire
Monitoring and research

How is AF&PA's New Rate Calculated?

AF&PA updated our recycling rate methodology.

The new rate is calculated as the amount of paper recycled compared to the amount of paper available for recovery. Aspects of the calculations are based on estimates, which makes the rates best expressed as a range.

The previous rate measured the amount of paper recycled compared to the amount of paper used.

How Can I Make Sure My Paper and Cardboard Gets Recycled?

The recycling process, especially at home, starts with you. Here’s what you can do to help make sure your paper products end up at one of our mills:

Check your local guidelines for what’s accepted. This helps avoid contamination.
Keep paper products dry and clean.
Empty and flatten cardboard boxes to save space.
If something isn’t currently accepted in your area like pizza boxes or paper cups, ask your local government why not. Send them our guidance.

What Are Examples of Sustainable Forest Management Practices?

Foresters and scientists use a variety of tactics to manage a forest. These practices help maintain a forest’s health and growth. They’re also one of the best ways to ensure the longevity of a forest.

Our expert foresters said forest management practices include:

Reforestation and replanting
Wildlife habitat creation and enhancement

On managed forests, trees are replanted to continue the cycle of growing. More than 1 billion seedlings are planted every year in the U.S. The majority of those are planted on managed forests.

Why is it Okay to Remove Trees From a Forest?

Foresters manage forests like you might manage a garden. Like weeding a garden, foresters do selective cuts or “thinnings” that remove dead, diseased, or otherwise troubled trees.

They also pull out underbrush that could catch fire to help prevent forest fires. This gives healthier trees the space and resources they need to thrive.

There are many reasons why trees are removed from forests, including:

There’s not enough room for all the trees to grow.
To provide a habitat for wildlife.
To prevent forest fires.
When more light needs to reach the forest floor.
The trees are sick. They can get infected with diseases and insects, which can spread.
A forester prescribed it for the long-term planning and health of a forest.

Paper ballots help provide reliability and security. According to Verified Voting, in 2024, 95% of voters are expected to use a ballot with a verifiable paper trail.

Is a Specific Kind of Paper Used for Paper Ballots?

Yes, paper ballots are made based on specifications from election officials and equipment manufacturers. This ensures ballot scanners and ballot marking devices correctly process the ballots.

Election officials cannot use any kind of paper to print paper ballots. The type of paper they use is based on the type of ballot tabulator.

How Are Paper Ballots Made?

Paper ballots are made from specialty graphic paper. U.S. paper mills manufacture specialty graphic paper year-round.

Paper ballots need to meet certain specifications for ballot tabulators to process them correctly. The specifications can include:

Weight - yes, paper has different weights!
Brightness
Opacity, or how see through the paper is
Caliper, which means the thickness
Smoothness

Once a paper mill receives an order, the paper is produced to the specifications required. Then, there are multiple paths the paper can take before it ends up at a voting location:

The paper mill can send the paper directly to a converter or a printer.
The paper can go to a distributor first and the distributor sends it to a converter or a printer.

Paper converters take unprinted paper and turn it into the finished ballot sizes. Printers print the ink on a ballot.

Once the ballots are printed, they are shipped to the election district or assembled with other election materials by election service providers that manage the voting process workflow. Election officials work with paper suppliers and place orders for paper ballots months in advance.

Other election materials like ballot envelopes and instructions can be printed on different paper weights and types.

Are Paper Ballots Secure?

Paper ballots are a tangible and trusted option. They provide a paper backup that can be counted again, which enhances the security of our election system.

What is Paper Pulp?

Pulp is broken down plant fiber. It is the primary raw material used as the first step in the papermaking process. In addition to pulp being the basis for products like copy paper and cardboard boxes, this fascinating material is also found in:

Diapers
Menstrual products
Computer screens
Paint
Clothes

To create pulp, AF&PA member companies use 2 main inputs:

Wood from sustainably managed forests where trees are replanted
Recycled paper

How is Paper Pulp Made?

The pulping process starts with what kind of input material is being used.

When using wood, the main goal of pulp production is to separate the cellulose fibers from the lignin. Cellulose fiber is the structural backbone of paper products. Lignin is a natural glue-like substance that holds the cellulose together.

Softwoods, like pine, and hardwoods like oak or ash are both used to make pulp. Softwood pulp has longer fibers and is used for products that need strength, like cardboard— what the industry refers to as containerboard, — or paper grocery bags.

Hardwood pulp has shorter, fatter fibers that add bulk to products. They also make something softer. This makes it good for things like toilet paper and paper towels.

When using recycled paper, papers that are recovered for reuse are mixed in a giant blender called a repulper. This helps separate the fibers so they can be washed, screened and turned into something new.

What Are the Main Types of Paper Pulp?

Pulp can be divided into 2 main groups based on how it was produced: Mechanical and chemical.

Mechanical Pulp

Sometimes called groundwood, this pulp is broken down manually. It goes through a physical grinding process of wood.

This process keeps the lignin in the pulp. Keeping lignin in the pulp means more pulp is produced. However, it also means there are more impurities in the final product.

This pulp is used for products like newspapers or magazines.

Chemical Pulp

This pulp is broken down using a variety of chemicals, referred to as “liquor.” More than 90% of these chemicals are reused.

Using chemicals allows the cellulose fibers to separate without losing their strength or length. A mixture of long and short fibers is used for products like high-quality printer paper and writing paper.

Leftover waste chemicals, called black liquor, can be burned as fuel to power the mill.

What is Specialty Pulp?

There are many types of specialty pulps.

Fluff Pulp: Fluff pulp is a highly purified pulp. This means the lignin is removed entirely, leaving only the cellulose fibers. This pulp is very absorbent and can be found in items like diapers and menstrual products.

Nanocellulose: This pulp can end up in your computer screen! Nanocellulose — which is just cellulose but smaller — dries thin, clear and flexible and can be used when making certain technology.

Cellulose fibers from pulp called Dissolving Pulp can even be converted into threads and end up in the fabric of your clothes or sheets.

What Extracurricular Activities Are You a Part of, and How Have They Shaped Your Life Experience?

“Two of my favorite extracurricular activities I’ve been involved in have been CreateAThon and Student-Made.

CreateAThon is an event my college puts on every year where students are split into teams for different nonprofits. We then spend 24 hours (all night!) putting together marketing and design materials that the nonprofits would not typically be able to afford. The next morning, all the teams get to present their work directly to the nonprofits. It was not only a valuable experience in terms of experiencing making materials for real clients, but also it felt good to be able to deliver work to organizations that needed it.

Student-made is an organization that gives students a platform to connect with other student entrepreneurs on campus to sell our handmade goods. I love collecting sea glass, and my hobby for a few years has been learning to wire wrap it and make jewelry pieces. Student-made has given me an accessible way to begin selling some of my work and make new friends and connections along the way.” -- Mary Stafford, University of South Carolina ‘24

On July 14, 2024, the price of a first-class stamp increased from $.68 to $.73. This is the 6th rate hike since 2021. Postal rates are climbing faster than inflation.

But why? We explain why United States Postal Service (USPS) postal rates went up and what higher postal rates mean for the paper industry.

Breaking Down the USPS “Delivering for America Plan”

The Delivering for America Plan (DFA) was published in March of 2021 by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. The goals for the plan were to:

Achieve financial stability;
Improve postal service; and
Reorganize key networks like delivery and processing.

It is important to note: As these goals were developed, stakeholder input was not solicited from those who rely on USPS – like the paper industry.

Understanding the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022

The bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act was signed into law in 2022, giving USPS $50 billion in relief of financial obligations and budget deficits. The legislation aimed to:

Increase financial stability for USPS;
Increase transparency;
Improve postal service; and Keep U.S. mail as a competitive option.

One of the provisions was mandating 6-day-a-week delivery for mail. However, the bill did not address postal rate uncertainty.

Are Postage Rate Increases Helping USPS?

The short answer is no. Through the DFA, USPS increased postage rates to help address financial challenges. Since 2021, postage rates have increased a record 6 times. In fact, postal rates have risen faster than inflation!

Meanwhile, USPS continues to suffer financial losses as well as service and operational issues. Here are a few examples:

Financial: In FY2023, they lost $6.5 billion. They are estimated to lose another $6.3 billion in FY 2024. The U.S. government’s fiscal year starts on October 1 and ends the following year on September 30.
Mail Volume Declines: Rate hikes have contributed to driving steep declines in mail volume. Mail volume is the total number of pieces of mail delivered. Annual volume since 2020 has declined by 13 billion pieces, or 10%.
Service: Just 83% of first-class mail was delivered on time in the beginning of 2024 compared to the DFA target of 95%. That’s the lowest service level in 3 years.

This is unsustainable for the Postal Service and those who rely on them for their business and communication, such as industries like ours and the families who live and work in our communities.

Postage Rate Hikes and Service Issues Affect the Paper Industry

USPS is an essential service to our industry and those who use our products, delivering approximately 39% - or nearly $6.5 billion worth - of communication papers produced in the U.S.

Things like:

Postcards;
Billing statements and promotional offers; and
Personal mail like a birthday card or letter to a friend or family member.

These rate hikes make mail less affordable, reduce on-time delivery service, and drive down mail volume. Our industry relies on USPS.

We need consistent and timely service, and postal rates that are predictable and affordable.

Does the U.S. Paper Industry Contribute to Deforestation?

No. The U.S. pulp and paper industry is not linked to global deforestation and forest degradation.

U.S. forests are strong and stable. More than 1 billion trees are replanted in the U.S. each year.

The U.S. paper industry is a responsible steward of our planet’s resources. We have a long history of sustainable forest management and innovation.

Our industry uses trees from working forests. These forests are continuously replanted, ensuring a healthy balance for the future.

How Does the U.S. Paper Industry Source its Wood Responsibly?

The industry prioritizes responsible wood sourcing. We do this in a few ways. Here's how:

Sustainable Fiber Procurement: AF&PA members adhere to sustainable fiber procurement principles as a condition of membership. Procurement is how our members get the wood they need to make the products we rely on.

These principles assure the suppliers our members source wood from are committed to sustainable forest management and harvesting practices.

Sustainable Forest Management Best Practices: We commit to sustainable forest management practices including:

Forest certification programs to provide standards, guidelines, and structure for sustainable forest management.
Fiber sourcing programs that are third-party verified and are recognized globally.

Complying with the Lacey Act: The Lacey Act combats illegal logging worldwide. It bans the import of wood, pulp and paper products that are sourced from illegally harvested forests. U.S. paper companies have to follow it.

Water is an essential part of the pulp and papermaking process. The U.S. paper industry is committed to sustainable water management. Our members are continuously innovating to reduce and reuse water.

Most of the water gets returned to the environment, often cleaner than before! Water can be reused 10 times throughout the manufacturing process, saving tons of fresh water.

Is the Paper Industry a Responsible and Sustainable Manufacturer?

reduction in GHG emissions since 2005

Yes! The U.S. paper industry is a crucial part of the climate solution.

We took early, voluntary action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Since 2005, AF&PA members have reduced GHG emissions by more than 24%. And they’ve committed to reducing GHG emissions by 50% by 2030!

We’ve also improved our energy efficiency by more than 13% since 2005. This is largely due to the increased use of renewable energy like biomass.

As part of our 2030 sustainability goals, we’re advancing a circular value chain through the production of renewable and recyclable products.

That includes increasing the percentage of our products that are recyclable or compostable. We’re also increasing the use of secondary materials like recycled paper and wood leftovers.

Paper Cup Recycling is Growing

The good news is the paper industry can recycle paper cups! They get a whole new life after you use them. Here's how and why:

Growing Network: Across North America, more than 40 mills can recycle paper cups and turn them into new products. The number of cities accepting paper cups is growing too. Cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, New York City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. already accept cups in their recycling programs.
Rapid Development: Paper mills are adding and advancing the technology and infrastructure needed to process paper cups.
Industry Collaboration: The Paper Cup Alliance works with mills, recycling centers and communities to expand paper cup recycling access.

Sustainability is an important consideration when making purchasing decisions. Reusable options have their own environmental impacts and considerations such as:

Production: Many reusable cup options are made from fossil-based, non-renewable or non-recyclable materials. Manufacturing reusable cups requires energy and generates emissions.
Hygiene: The design of a reusable cup can lead to mold and bacteria build-up. Hygiene also becomes a concern in high-volume restaurants or places like airports.
Transportation: Reusable cups are heavier than paper cups. This can generate more emissions during shipping.
Washing: Washing reusable cups, especially on a large scale, can negate environmental benefits.

Ultimately, the best choice for you depends on the situation and personal preference. But paper cups are an important part of advancing sustainability goals. They are made from renewable resources and can be recycled into new products.
