Tissue Production Reaches All-Time Highs

AF&PA released a press statement and tissue production data that speaks to record rates the industry saw earlier this year. In March, essential workers at AF&PA member companies manufactured nearly 700,000 tons of tissue, more than any other month since 2007, when AF&PA began collecting related monthly historical data.

That rate works out to more than 4 pounds of tissue for each U.S. resident.

Meanwhile, in February and March, AF&PA members reliably delivered more than 22,000 tons of tissue per day—an all-time high for the industry.

AF&PA President and CEO Heidi Brock noted, “As daily production reached new thresholds, AF&PA member companies stayed the course, delivering sustainable tissue products to meet everyday, essential needs. I am heartened by the industry’s commitment to safety, and its ability to move products to the global market – just as we do 52 weeks each year.”

Nearly 700,000 tons of tissue produced by U.S. mills in March, more than any other month since 2007.

WASHINGTON – The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock issued the following statement regarding the U.S. paper and wood products industry’s record-high levels of tissue production in February and March in response to unprecedented demand from COVID-19:

“The men and women who work in the paper and wood products industry continue to do their part to respond to demand for products like bathroom tissue and paper towels during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. United States tissue mills manufactured nearly 700,000 tons of tissue in March, more than any other month since 2007, when AF&PA began collecting related monthly historical data. This rate works out to more than 4 pounds of tissue for each U.S. resident.

“U.S tissue manufacturers also reached a milestone for daily production at a time of unprecedented need. In February and March, AF&PA members safely and reliably delivered more than 22,000 tons of tissue per day – an all-time high for the industry.

“As daily production reached new thresholds, AF&PA member companies stayed the course, delivering sustainable tissue products to meet everyday, essential needs. What is tissue and how is it made? Tissue paper products – which include bathroom tissue, paper towels and napkins – are products that contribute to improved personal hygiene, comfort and convenience. Parent tissue is made on paper machines in large rolls that are ultimately converted into various configurations of tissue products. These products are inherently sustainable whether made from sustainably managed wood fiber sources or recovered paper or a combination of the two. Demand for tissue products ensures that the resources used to make them will be plentiful for generations to come. Where does parent roll tissue end up? Large, parent rolls are created on paper machines and are then converted into individual rolls or folded into sheets by in-house converting operations or by third-party converters. WASHINGTON – American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock today highlighted statements from the United States Postal Service (USPS) in response to questions about the safety of receiving packaging and mail:

“American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) members take safety very seriously, and our industry diligently continues to manufacture products to help customers address current challenges related to COVID-19.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have provided guidance indicating there is no evidence COVID-19 is spreading through the mail, and WHO has further stated that the risk of catching the virus from a package that has been moved, traveled and exposed to different conditions and temperatures is low.

“Paper products play an important role in facilitating product safety, enhancing hygiene and responding to COVID-19 challenges. Our industry remains committed to meeting the needs of its customers and the public, particularly in this dynamic environment.”

WASHINGTON – American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock issued the following statement encouraging federal, state and local governments to recognize paper and wood products manufacturing facilities as “essential” when drafting Shelter in Place orders:

“The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) recognizes the daunting challenges our elected officials, health administrators and others are facing in making decisions aimed at protecting communities across the country. This is particularly true when our leaders find it necessary to enforce ‘Shelter in Place’ or similar quarantine orders.

“AF&PA members make essential products, including tissue products, packaging for food and other consumer products, building products and shipping containers. Our members also supply packaging to agricultural producers, food processors, hygiene product manufacturers, grocers and other retailers. Disruptions in the availability of these goods would cause significant hardships to consumers across the country who depend on steady and stable supplies.

“To provide greater certainty and clarity for our industry’s businesses and employees, we ask for clear exclusion of our manufacturing operations from ‘Shelter in Place’ orders as the paper and wood products industry plays an essential role in avoiding unnecessary disruptions of goods and services.”
